MOHAVE COUNTY – Mohave Community College has officially broken ground on the first student housing complex on the Bullhead City Campus. The College held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday with MCC stakeholders, representatives of Kinney Construction Services, Inc. (KCS), and Todd & Associates, Inc., architecture.
“This is a special day for Mohave Community College,” said Dr. Stacy Klippenstein, MCC President. “The student housing project will transform the Bullhead campus and the overall College, and will provide another housing resource to students who may struggle with finding affordable options or those desiring independence while attending MCC.”
The College began researching student housing in response to student requests, preliminary Facilities Master Plan results, community support and athletic program logistics. Surveys and multiple meetings were convened, including a highly publicized public meeting in February where the City of Bullhead announced a resolution in support of student housing at MCC. It was determined that student housing would be a benefit for students, a new revenue stream for the College and an added asset to the community. The MCC Board of Governors approved the project during its May 2023 meeting.
MCC selected Kinney Construction Services, Inc., as its Design-Build Contractor. KCS is working with Todd & Associates, Inc., the project Architect. The Design-Build team was selected through a public solicitation process back in May of this year.
“It’s an honor to work with Mohave Community College again and be involved with this project that will ultimately provide further housing options for students,” said KCS President Mike Thomas. “We understand that this project is just the beginning of a 10-year vision and Master Plan, leading to an even brighter future for MCC.”
The student housing project features 10 units with differentiating capacities, up to six bedrooms per unit. The project is currently in the final stages of the design phase with Todd & Associates, Inc., and will also feature landscaped courtyards, a leasing office, mail room and expanded infrastructure in the future.
The design will also include a larger apartment for a resident manager, laundry facilities, common area study space, mechanical rooms and janitorial rooms. It was estimated that the total building would be approximately 17,500 square feet.
The project is meant to complement the natural surroundings and fit into the ambience of the Bullhead City Campus. The project is set to be completed and open to students by the start of the 2024/2025 school year. Construction is expected to be completed in July 2024.
