Former People-Sentinel editor Dr. Chrissy Holliday has made history after being named the first woman president of Mohave College in Arizona.
Holliday spent several years living and working in the Barnwell and Allendale communities before beginning her career in higher education. She said her time in the area helped shape who she is today and prepared her for her new role.
“I think the main way it helped me is living in Barnwell and Allendale counties is where I really learned the importance of community, and saw how people coming together could make a huge difference,” Holliday said.
After graduating from college, Holliday moved to the area and worked as a reporter before becoming an editor at The People-Sentinel. She later worked with Allendale County Alive and USC Salkehatchie.
Holliday said the skills she learned in journalism still help her in her current position.
“I still use the skills I learned every day: writing, asking tough questions, figuring out how the pieces fit together,” Holliday said.
While working with USC Salkehatchie in Allendale, Holliday saw the connection between a college and the community. She learned how much of an impact people can make when they come together to support something they care about.
“That lesson has never left me,” Holliday said. “That is one reason that I love higher education.”
