MOHAVE COUNTY – Against all odds, Tabitha Jacob, refused to let life’s challenges define her future. Faced with obstacles that might have discouraged others, she remained focused on achieving an education and creating new opportunities. Today, her journey stands as an example of resilience, determination and the transformative impact of higher education.

At a young age, Jacob became a mother which didn’t allow her to finish high school the traditional way but eventually earned her GED diploma. She had to learn how to maintain a balance between home and school, and learn how to be a student again. She didn’t let moments of burnout, self-doubt and fear stop her from achieving her goals.

Jacob was first introduced to Mohave College when her grandmother would go to the Lake Havasu Campus to take watercolor classes, but overall decided to attend because of the affordable tuition.

“Those experiences introduced me to Mohave College at an early age and helped foster my love of learning and creativity,” she Jacob said. “Combined with its close proximity to home and quality education, Mohave was the ideal place to continue my education.”

She’s a student on the Bullhead Campus, and is working on her prerequisite courses to apply to the dental hygiene program. Jacob decided to pursue dental hygiene after learning about the field from classmates, professionals and her experience with receiving dental work. Her ultimate career goal is to become a dentist or pursue a role in the medical field in hopes to make an impact in peoples lives and health.

Jacob is a first-generation student, meaning she’s the first in her family to attend a college or university. Being the first caused her to learn how to the pace of coursework, expectations and managing her time wisely to meet assignment deadlines, but adapted to build up her confidence and academic abilities.

Since coming to Mohave, Jacob has learned the value of obtaining a higher education through finding confidence, and realizing her past doesn’t define her future.

“The greatest value I’ve found in attending Mohave College is the opportunity to pursue my education in a supportive and accessible environment,” she said. “The affordable tuition, flexible accommodations and encouragement from faculty have made it possible to continue my studies and manage responsibilities at home.”

When Jacob is not excelling in her courses, she spends time with her family, enjoys traveling, exploring nature and expressing her creativity by trying new recipes.
