Mohave College Board Approves Cosmetology Program, Expand Presence in Downtown Kingman Mohave County - The Mohave College District Governing Board has approved the launch of a new Cosmetology Certificate program and the purchase of a building in downtown Kingman to house it. Pending approval from the Higher Learning Commision, the College is prepared to launch the 40-credit certificate program as early as February 2026. It would train students in hair, nail, and skin care services, while also incorporating business and entrepreneurial skills through a partnership with the College’s Small Business Development Center. The curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for state licensure and to open their own salons or pursue additional educational pathways. College leaders said the new program will help meet a significant local workforce need. A recent labor market report shows cosmetology jobs are projected to grow more than 12% in the coming years, with more than 300 postings currently in Mohave County alone. “Local salon owners consistently told us, ‘We need more stylists,’ and this program directly responds to that call,” said Dr. June Weiss, Dean of Health and Human Services. “It also creates new opportunities for high school students, recent graduates, and adults seeking a career change.” The College is looking to place the program next to its Beale Street Center in downtown Kingman. A neighboring building is currently for sale.  After learning about the benefits that the program would bring to students and communities throughout the region, the board today agreed to make an offer to purchase the building for $425,000.  “Investing in downtown Kingman is an investment in our students and our community,” said Dr. Tim Culver, Interim President of Mohave College. “The return on this project will far exceed simply holding reserves in an account, because it will generate jobs, support small businesses, and give students another high-quality, affordable path to a rewarding career.” Community surveys show strong demand for the College creating this program, with 76% of nearly 500 respondents expressing interest in enrolling, including a large number of local high school students. The program is expected to become self-sustaining by its second year, with projections showing positive net revenue and strong enrollment growth.

MOHAVE COUNTY – Mohave College board members have officially launched the search for the next President of Mohave College. To assist with this important process, the Board has engaged the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT), a nationally recognized leader in executive searches for higher education.

ACCT will guide the College and Board through all phases of the search, including development of the Presidential Profile, candidate recruitment, and extensive consultation throughout the process. Dr. Deborah DiThomas, Ed.D., will serve as the lead search consultant.

Public Input on Presidential Profile

A critical first step is the development of a Presidential Profile that reflects the needs and aspirations of the College and the communities it serves. To gather broad input, Mohave College will host four public forums on September 30 and October 1, 2025.

Students, employees, and community members are encouraged to attend and share their thoughts on the qualities, characteristics, and qualifications the next President should possess, as well as the challenges and opportunities ahead for Mohave College. The forums will be facilitated by Dr. DiThomas.

Public Forum Schedule
  • September 30, 4:00 p.m. (AZ) – Colorado City Campus, Room 301
  • October 1, 9:00 a.m. – Lake Havasu City Campus, Room 204
  • October 1, 12:00 p.m. – Bullhead City Campus, Room 508
  • October 1, 5:00 p.m. – Neal Campus Kingman, Room 1103

All forums will also be accessible remotely at: https://mohave.zoom.us/j/87105218794. No RSVP is required.

Online Survey Option

For those unable to attend, ACCT has developed a short anonymous survey (survey closed). The feedback collected will help shape the draft Presidential Profile.

Moving Forward

“We want this process to be inclusive and transparent,” said the Board of Governors in a joint statement. “These forums and the survey are opportunities for our students, employees, and community to play an important role in identifying the qualities needed in the next President of Mohave College.”

More information about the search process is available at the college website Mohave.edu/President-Search.
