MOHAVE COUNTY – Jared Giamporcaro, a Mohave College student, didn’t start her educational journey the traditional way of starting after graduating from high school. She dropped out of school when she was in the seventh grade, and later came to the College to work on her high school equivalency that helped her earn her GED.

She decided to attend Mohave College because it was the place that made her feel that higher education was accessible.

“Mohave College made me realize that college can be for people like me. I use to think higher education was out of reach, but the College proved otherwise,” Giamporcaro said. “It gave me the support, flexibility and encouragement I needed to believe in myself and keep pushing forward.”

She has already earned two associate degrees – an Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts and an Associate of Arts in Social and Behavioral Science. Now, she’s working on her third associate’s degree in administration of justice.

Giamporcaro decided to pursue degrees in these fields because her ultimate career goal is to work in forensic case management. She chose this field due to her own life experiences but also because she’s a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), where she advocates on behalf of children in the foster system.

She said her role as a CASA has shown her how powerful it is to have someone to trust and has your best interest in mind.

Like most students at Mohave, she’s also a first-generation college student, meaning she’s the first in her family to attend a college or university.  She says they see the value of higher education because it can change lives, and at Mohave the employees support every part of who she is, as a working mother, student, and community member.

Giamporcaro enjoys the student life on campus too. She’s part of student clubs, including Psyched Out – a student psychology club, and she is also member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society where she serves as Vice President of Leadership. Being part of student clubs and campus activities gives her opportunities to lead, connect and make a difference.

In her free time, she enjoys going to her children’s games and activities, helping organize the area’s youth soccer league, baking sourdough, and making clothes from scratch.

For anyone who is looking to improve their station in life, Giamporcaro recommends enrolling at Mohave College where every dollar students invest in their education results more than six dollars in higher lifetime career earnings.

There’s still time to sign up for the fall semester with twelve-week classes starting Sept. 15 and eight-week classes starting Oct. 13. Those interested in learning more about becoming a student should visit Mohave.edu/Admission. Fill out the online form to create a student account, and a College representative will be in touch to assist with the application, tuition assistance and enrollment process.
