MOHAVE COUNTY – Mohave Community College Community Education is gearing up to kick off its Assisted Living Caregiver course, and space is still available for community members looking to put themselves on a fast track to a rewarding career while also helping others.

Assisted living caregivers help people maintain health, independence and quality of life by assisting with day-to-day activities, administering medication, transportation and so much more.

“As a caregiver in assisted living, you have the opportunity to enhance residents’ lives by offering support with daily activities, meal assistance and life-enrichment programs,” says Instructor Lorely Mutchler. “It’s an incredibly rewarding experience.”

Instruction for the Assistant Living Caregiver course begins with lecture at 9 a.m. before moving to lab at 1 p.m. The course will see students develop basic caregiving skills and knowledge to perform safely and effectively as a caregiver in the assisted living or home settings. The class runs from Nov. 4 to Dec. 9.

Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays

Lecture from 9 a.m. – Noon

Lab from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

The course culminates with a final exam, for which students will be expected to Identify the levels of care within as assisted living facility and care necessary for each level; Identify the legal and ethical issues, residents’ rights, mental health and social service needs; and Demonstrate basic care giving skills, basic restorative services, medication management and care of the cognitively impaired resident.

Additionally, students will be able to demonstrate maintenance of home environment and job management skills, as well as effective communication, ethical and legal behaviors, good grooming and dependability. Mutchler also says that there is currently a huge demand for caregivers both in facilities and private care as people live longer lives.

“If you’re looking to build a career in healthcare, this is a great place to start,” Mutchler says. “If you love caring for others, you’ll develop meaningful relationships with residents who will come to value your presence in their community. It’s not just a career; it’s life changing for you and the people for whom you care.”
