MOHAVE COUNTY – Beth Hooven has been working at Mohave Community College since 2017. In the amount that she has been here, she has impacted the lives of many nursing students who have been through her classroom.

This year she has been selected as the 2023 Ellen Licari Service to Students Award. The award recognizes faculty and staff members who put students first.

“I feel honored that students recognized the value I bring to their nursing education and journey,” Hooven said.

She enjoys being part of the nursing faculty because she gets to make learning fun, and see students grow their nursing knowledge and skills.

Hooven started at MCC when she heard about the clinical instructor position from an MCC employee. She ended up getting the position and has been impacting students in the nursing profession ever since.

Hooven said she loved being a clinical instructor but really wanted to teach in the classroom so she was motivated to get her master’s degree in nursing education. Then in 2018 she became a full-time faculty has been since then.

The excerpt below is from an MCC student who nominated Hooven for the Ellen Licari Service to Students Award:

“There hasn’t been a professor like her. She goes above and beyond in every way. She fosters a learning atmosphere and makes it easy for us to ask questions. I’ve grown and learned a lot with her teaching style as a nursing student and many critical thinking tips that will help me in my future career as a nurse. Professor Hooven has offered extra support, resources and feedback throughout the semester. I would love Professor Hooven to be recognized for the wonderful teacher and role model that she is to all her students. Besides being a professor, she dedicates her time being a club advisor for the nursing association club. She has not only served as a professor, mentor, club advisor but someone whose voice I will remember saying ‘head to toe’ which guided me through my hardest times of life yet and nursing school.”

She earned her associate degree in nursing from Catonsville Community College, bachelor in nursing from the University of Maryland and her masters in nursing education from Western Governors University.

Hooven has lived in Lake Havasu City for seven years but is Baltimore, Maryland native. She is a mother, wife and a grandmother. On her free time, she enjoys yoga, reading, puzzles, playing games and spending time with her family.
