The MCC Computer Science Department is offering camps on all campuses, which feature fun and engaging ways to educate teens about the STEM fields.

STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.  According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, STEM degree holders have higher incomes than those in non-STEM careers.   STEM occupations are growing at 17%, while other occupations are growing at 9.8%.

On the Lake Havasu City campus, teenage campers will get hands-on practice taking apart, rebuilding, and building from scratch a personal computer.  They’ll learn about hardware, and some software, for personal computers.   The skills they will learn are similar to the requirements of the A+ Computer Repair Certification Exam.  This camp is June 4 – June 14.  9:00 a.m. – Noon. Monday – Thursday.

The Lake Havasu City campus will also have an afternoon day camp that focuses on Computer Programming and Web Design.  Campers will learn basic programs in Java, and apply these concepts in creating a web-based project of their choosing.  This will involve creating a web page using HTML5, styling it using CSS and using JavaScript to provide the necessary logic. This camp is June 4 – June 14. 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.   Monday – Thursday.

MCC’s Bullhead City campus will teach campers to create Android apps. This summer camp will help teens get their feet wet in software development.  Teens will discover key concepts in computer science by creating basic programs in Java, and apply these concepts in creating actual Android apps. Android app development will involve the use of smartphone technologies including the touch screen, phonebook, camera, web, GPS, and more. This camp is June 4 – June 14.  9:00 a.m. – Noon. Monday – Thursday.

Teens at the MCC Colorado City campus will also build Android apps and learn code during their camp.   They will learn how to create basic programs in Java, and use the skills to build Android apps.  App development will involve smartphone technologies including touch screen, phonebook, camera, web, GPS and more!  This camp is June 4 – June 14.  9:00 a.m. – Noon. Monday – Thursday.

On the Neal Campus-Kingman students can learn about 3D Printers and Drones.  This camp will touch on many topics and projects involving Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). Learn about design, evaluation, teamwork, and communication. Play with 3D printers, virtual reality, drones, and more! Come explore the fun and diverse fields of science and engineering.  This camp is July 9 – July 19.  1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m on Monday – Thursday.

The cost of attending a camp is just $10 for each teen and attendees will receive a free shirt.  The camps are open to students 14 years old through high school seniors.  Students must have completed 8th grade to be eligible for the camp.
