Mohave Community College (MCC) proposes to revise its chemistry and biology courses to lay the groundwork for students’ understanding of the biotechnology concepts that will enable them to participate in the biotechnology future of Mohave County. In order to lay this groundwork, the MCC Science Department proposes to upgrade its biology and chemistry laboratory with equipment and learning software critical to the effective demonstration and inculcation of biotechnology fundamentals.

The intellectual merit of the project is in the merging of MCC’s science curriculum, the fundamental principles of the biotechnology sciences, and the laboratory/classroom instrumentation and data collection software. The proposed project will enable MCC to upgrade and strengthen the STEM fundamentals in its existing sciences courses and to prepare its students to keep pace with the continual intellectual discoveries of the scientific world.

The broader impact of the Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement project  lies in the integration of biotechnology concepts into the MCC science curriculum, which represents the first step in a long-range project to create a workforce of trained individuals in Mohave County familiar with the techniques and methodologies of biotechnology manufacturing. Student success in basic molecular biotechnology concepts and laboratory techniques will entice biotechnology businesses to locate in the I-40 corridor communities served by MCC, and the biotechnology industry in Mohave County will, in turn, invest in MCC and provide incentive to MCC students preparing to work in the biotechnology industry.
