Mohave Community College

Project: Wireless Computer Hardware
Funder: Hewlett Packard
Participants: Chuck Spotts, Vice Chancellor of Information Technology; Tim Montbriand, Grants Specialist; Diana Stithem, Dean of Distance Education; Dan Lara, Division Chair for General Education; and RuthAnn Wilson, Assistant to the Chancellor for Institutional Effectiveness

The recipients of this grant will receive Hewlett Packard’s Compaq Tablet PCs, and if Mohave Community College is successful in becoming a recipient, it proposes initially to use the portable PCs for field work on the BLM Springs Project.

Field investigators equipped with the Compaq Tablet PCs will be able to share files, photographs, and maps. As the different team vehicles move from one location to another on the project, the teams will be able to exchange GPS coordinates, photo points, and site descriptions.

This package of information could be entered into ArcView software while in the field, allowing for a detailed comparison both within and between study sites. This field-sharing of information will reduce dramatically the time spent in debriefing sessions, will reduce error, and will expose students to the use of sophisticated technology in scientific fieldwork.

The results of exposing students to a real-world application of technology will increase the students’ interest in science-related disciplines and hopefully encourage students to move beyond the two-year degree to baccalaureate or graduate degrees in the field of science.
