Mohave Community College

Project: Portal Implementation
Funder:  CampusEAI Consortium Oracle
Participants: Chuck Spotts, Vice Chancellor of Information Technology; Tim Montbriand, Grants Specialist; Josh Ganyo, Web Master; and RuthAnn Wilson, Assistant to the Chancellor for Institutional Effectiveness

Mohave Community College has received one of twenty-five (25) CampusEAI Consortium Oracle Portal Grants. The award to MCC is valued at $1,045,000.  CampusEAI Consortium will cover the costs associated with the implementation of and training with the CampusEAI Oracle Portal and will also provide software and hardware for the portal.

The Consortium will provide support to MCC in the installation and configuration of the portal as well. According to Josh Ganyo, MCC Webmaster (SunGard Collegis), “The Campus EAI portal grant will allow us to bring the college’s website up-to-date in terms of flexibility and technology. The portal will allow us to create separate sites for students, employees, and potential students. The portal will also allow us to deliver specific tools for each group, thus providing a more user-friendly environment for each segment. The portal provides a modular framework, flexible enough to integrate college systems and future technologies.”

“The Portal will provide each member of the community with the ability to customize the appearance, layout, and information content on an individual basis. The portal limits or expands the presentation of information and access to services on an individual basis; the information delivered to each portal instance is personalized to the individual user. The portal also provides a convenient set of communications services which are web and wireless based,” added Ganyo.

The portal will streamline MCC’s technology services. “This is a great win for MCC.  The use of portal technology at MCC will afford students, faculty, and staff the ability to log into a single gateway and access all of their tools with a single sign-on,” says Chuck Spotts, MCC Chief Information Officer (SunGard Collegis).

The grant award puts Mohave Community College in the company of some very prestigious institutions with a proven track record of using technology effectively to benefit students. According to Spotts, “Working with member schools of the CampusEAI consortium and Oracle will also provide MCC with valuable technology resources that would otherwise not be available to a small, rural community college.  We are thankful for the opportunity to participate in this national program.”

Thomas C. Henry, Chancellor of Mohave Community College believes that receiving the EAI Consortium Portal Grant Award is a big step in the right direction for the College. “Mohave Community College is currently moving forward in a number of directions, and I am very pleased with the efforts of SunGard Collegis to provide appropriate technologies for the improvement of the College’s services to the students and the communities of Mohave County. This grant is another instance of that sustained effort. The award puts us on the national stage.”

The College was notified of the award on September 10th, and the implementation of the CampusEAI Oracle Portal will take place from September to December of this year, with a “beta launch” January through May 2005, and a “production launch” May through August 2005. “It’s great to be part of a consortium made up of institutions with a commitment to sharing expertise and insights,” says Tim Montbriand, MCC Grants Specialist. “I am very pleased with the way that MCC is using technology, not as an end in itself, but as a way to realize the College’s mission.”
