Mohave Community College

What is SEI? -The acronym stands for “Structured English Immersion” and refers to an endorsement required by the state of Arizona (under state laws A.R.S. 15-751 - A.R.S. 15-756) for public school educators. SEI training is designed to improve the academic success of limited English proficient (LEP) students. See links on the right for additional information.

Who should take SEI courses provided by Mohave Community College? - Any persons holding a valid Elementary, Secondary, Principal, Superintendent, Supervisor, Career and Technical, and Special Education Arizona State Certificate. Those holding a full English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement or a full Bilingual Endorsement do not need to obtain the Provisional SEI Endorsement.

Should undergraduate students who plan to become teachers take SEI courses at Mohave Community College? -
No. Undergraduate students planning to transfer to a university teacher education program should NOT take SEI courses at MCC. The universities will require transfer students to take SEI courses at the university.

What SEI training is available at MCC?
MCC offers three SEI courses in a variety of modalities.

  • EDU 207 – Provisional Structured English Immersion (1 Semester Hour Provisional)
  • EDU 240 – Augmented Provisional Structured English Immersion (3 Semester Augmented Provisional)
  • EDU 250 – Structured English Immersion: Methods and Materials in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (3 Semester Hours Completion)

Which MCC SEI course should I take? -The full SEI endorsement consists of a provisional course (MCC’s EDU 207 or EDU 240) and a completion course (MCC’s EDU 250). For the best advice about which course an individual should take, contact the Arizona Department of Education (ADE).
