Grade 8 - Things to do before you begin high school  

  • Talk to friends and family about careers and possible school choices.
  • Find out what courses you should take in high school that will qualify you to attend certain colleges or enter certain fields.
  • Talk to your parents about how much they think they can help you with paying for your future education. Work together to establish a savings plan that you can participate in. Learn about financial aid.
  • Be sure you sign up for college preparation (prep) classes starting in ninth grade.

Grade 9 - Things to do during Grade 9

  • Make a four-year plan for high school classes. Map out what you will take when.
  • Investigate career information in areas that interest you.
  • Analyze the courses you should be taking throughout high school to prepare for those careers.
  • Discuss career interests and college possibilities with your parents.
  • Meet and talk with your school guidance counselors about yourself and your future, and review your four-year plan of classes.
  • Find out about summer jobs and try to gain skills you would need to obtain one. Look into volunteer activities that will expand your experience and skills.
  • Ask how you can earn college credit while in high school!

Grade 10 -
Things to do during Grade 10

  • Begin to look at colleges and college material including financial aid material.
  • Take the PSAT in October for practice in taking college admissions test.
  • See your guidance counselor about taking an interest inventory. Make sure he or she knows you are college bound!
  • Make certain that your high school course selections are appropriate for your college and career choices.
  • Continue to talk with your parents about your interests and about your family’s ability to help you pay for it.
  • Continue to discuss your interests and concerns with your guidance counselor.
  • See your guidance counselor to ask about TECH PREP and how you can earn college credits while STILL in high school.

Grade 11 -
Things to do during Grade 11 in the FALL semester

  • Choose course selections that are appropriate for your college/career interest, and that will meet your high school graduation and college admissions requirements.
  • Take the PSAT in October to practice taking college admissions tests, and to establish eligibility for some scholarships.
  • Send for your own admission literature and application from the schools that are on the top of your list.
  • Attend college and/or career fairs in your school, community, or region.
  • Begin researching private sources of financial aid such as scholarships and write for applications.

Things to do during Grade 11 in the SPRING semester

  • Take the SAT or the ACT: check with your intended college to see which one is appropriate.
  • Begin to narrow your choices for schools you would like to attend.
  • Schedule a visit to the schools that are on the top of your list.
  • Check with your counselor, library and community organizations for names and addresses of possible scholarships sources. Call or send for the applications.
  • Develop a resume. Check online or in your library for resources on developing one.
  • If portfolios, audition tapes, writing samples, or other evidence of talent are required for admission or for scholarships, start to develop them now.
  • If you are seeking an athletic scholarship, talk with your coach. Make contact with coaches at the schools that interest you and fill out an NCA Clearinghouse application.
  • Find out how to include a resume or video tape of your accomplishments.

Things to do after Grade 11 in the SUMMER semester

  • Plan to take advantage of Mohave Community College’s Early Start program by taking a summer class at your local campus. Talk to an MCC counselor to find out more.

MCC’s Early Start Program offers you the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school! The program pays for eligible students’ regular tuition for up to seven credit hours any time from the summer after your junior year through the spring of your senior year. Courses must be 100-level or above.

Grade 12 -
Things to do during the FALL semester

  • Make sure you are meeting high school graduation and college admissions requirements.
  • Consult with your counselor, recruiter, family, and other people about your future plans.
  • Request applications materials for admissions and financial aid from schools to which you intend to apply.
  • Make a checklist/timeline of when applications for admissions and financial aid are due.
  • Prepare a proposed budget for your freshman year in college.
  • Apply to your schools of choice! Be aware of deadline dates!
  • Arrange to visit schools you are considering and schedule admissions interviews if required.
  • Take or retake the ACT or SAT, if you intend to do so.
  • Give recommendation forms to teachers, counselors, and other people from whom you are seeking references for admission and scholarship applications at least one month before they are due.
  • Meet admissions, financial aid, and scholarship application deadlines, and keep records of everything you submit.
  • If you are seeking athletic scholarships, make contact with coaches from the schools you are considering, and fill out an NCA Clearinghouse application.
  • Prepare portfolios, additions tapes, writing samples, and other evidence of talent required for admission or for scholarships.
  • Compare cost for freshman year at a university versus taking your first year or two at Mohave Community College.
  • Take advantage of the Early Start Program at Mohave Community College. Plan to take a class or two in the fall.

Things to do during Grade 12 in the SPRING semester

  • If you plan to attend MCC, notify your guidance counselor and complete the forms available in his or her office to be considered for a Board of Governors scholarship at MCC. Eligibility requires a class ranking in the top 10%
  • Apply for federal financial aid using the Free Applications for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and for scholarship using the applications preferred by your school of choice. The application for FAFSA is available online at www.studentaid.ed.gov.
  • Confirm that all school admissions application materials, including letters of reference and housing applications have been received.
  • Confirm deadlines for admission, financial aid and scholarships. These deadlines are often before March 1 for the fall semester. Submit any additionally required financial information and documentation.
  • Request that your high school send a copy of your transcript, which includes first semester of your senior year grades, to the school(s) to which you have applied.
  • When you receive the results of your financial aid application (Student Air Report SAR), both correct and return them if necessary – or sign the completed correct one and submit to other schools you may consider.
  • Decide which school you are going to attend, by the deadline, and notify the schools in writing as to weather you are accepting or declining admission.
  • Register for fall classes by your chosen school’s deadline. (Each school will have its own)
  • Review your financial aid award letter with your parents and be sure that you understand the terms and conditions that accompany which kind of aid. Sign your financial aid award and return it to the school.
  • Notify the financial aid office of any other outside scholarships or grants you have accepted since your initial application.
  • Be aware of due dates for tuition and fees, room and board, and any other expenses. Find out how finance aid will be disbursed and if you can defer bill payment until the funds are available.
  • Respond immediately to all correspondence regarding school, scholarships and financial aid.
  • REMEMBER, the financial aid process begins again in January! This is a yearly process.
  • Set up meetings with an academic counselor on your local Mohave Community College campus to learn about options and opportunities at MCC.
  • Take advantage of the Early Start Program at Mohave Community College. Plan to take a class or two in the spring – for transferring!
