What is Drafting Design? Drafting Design is the graphic representation that shows how to manufacture/construct a given item.

How much “Hand Drawing” is done compared to 30 years ago? Actually, very little.  The software that Designers use is so powerful, it will create a “Hand Drawing” without paper or pencil.  The emphasis is now on Design work rather than “Drafting.”

What are some of the job titles that individuals who work in the Drafting Design field might have? Individuals who work in the Drafting Design field are typically referred to as Mechanical Designers, Architectural Designers or Civil Designers. These are the most common titles. 

What exactly do Mechanical Designers do? Mechanical Designers design parts used in the aerospace, automotive and manufacturing industries. A large number of household items used everyday were designed by a mechanical designer.

What do Architectural Designers do? Architectural Designers work under the direction of licensed architects or engineers designing residential and commercial buildings. 

What do Civil Designers do? Civil Designers work under the direction of a licensed civil engineer designing roads and residential neighborhoods.

What are the typical work conditions for Designers? Designers typically work indoors and spend a large portion of their time at some type of CAD (computer aided design) work station. Sometimes, visits to the manufacturing floor or job sight are required. 

What type of software is used by Designers? Mechanical Designers, Architectural Designers and Civil Designers typically use some type of two-dimensional CAD software along with some type of 3-D solid modeling software.  

What is the job outlook for all of these areas? The job outlook is always good for any type of Design positions. Employers are always looking for qualified individuals who have earned certificates or degrees to work in these areas.           

What are the starting salaries for graduates from this program? Starting salaries are around $25,000 annually. With two to five years of work experience, designers will earn around $35,000 annually, and even more in urban areas.

How long will it take to complete the program? Full-time students can complete both certificates in one year. Part-time students can complete both certificates within two to three years, depending on the course load each semester.
