Career Planning Leads to Success

As your son or daughter begins a new stage in life, it is important that you are aware of the services and programs available to assist with his or her personal, academic, career and professional development. Parents can assist by taking an interest in and asking questions about their daughter/son's career development.

Elements of career development you can assist with:

  • Visit Career and Advisement Services when you visit campus.
  • Explore your skills, interests & values.
  • Take an active interest and ask career related questions.
  • Talk about your job and what you like and dislike about your job.
  • Talk to friends, supervisor/managers, and acquaintances that might be willing to allow your son/daughter to participate in an informational interview or have a job shadowing experience.
  • Explore study abroad opportunities - Learn new cultures and languages!
  • Encourage your son/daughter to seek summer employment related to his/her prospective career field.
  • Strongly encourage your student to participate in an internship or work related to their field of interest.
  • Always remember it is normal for a student to change his or her mind about a major or career.
  • Suggest that your student use on-line career assessment and exploration tools available.
  • Encourage your son/daughter to participate in experiential learning opportunities such as faculty and student research; service learning; volunteerism; internships or related work experiences.

Undecided about a Career Field or Changing Programs?

  • If your student is undecided, encourage him or her to visit Career Services to discuss career plans.
  • If undecided about a major contact the Academic Advising office on your campus and/or visit our website, What Can I Do With a Major In...?
  • If you are concerned that you son/daughter is experiencing anxiety, depression, physiological symptoms, or emotional issues, feel free to contact Academic Advising at any of the campuses.
